The Peony Pavilion is one of the most outstanding works in the history of Chinese opera. The script was written by Tang Xianzu, who lived in Ming Dynasty (1368―1644). The play focuses on the love story between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei. Du Liniang is a young lady who is strictly disciplined by her parents. However, she falls in love with a charming young man, Liu Mengmei, who emerged in her spring dream... After a pursuit through life and death, finally, she finds him and he recognizes her, so they get married and live happily ever after. In short, it is a story of love and dreams, as well as self-awareness. The most moving version of The Peony Pavilion is always on the Kunqv stage- a type of Chinese traditional opera with strict traditions and norms. Kunqv is known for its elegance and beauty yet its style is too set in stone and has been greatly challenged in contemporary times. Based on the script of my favorites, I tried to innovate the Kunqv scenic design in my work.
